Street Tag 12 hour Sponsored walk

A SPONSORED community game walk has helped raise money for a historical cinema.

Community Voluntary Services Tendring’s (CVST’s) David Cole, physical activity coordinator, completed a Street Tag 12 hour sponsored walk.

David embarked on a 12-hour walkathon around Harwich, playing Street Tag and visiting local businesses and supporters along the way.

The walk started at 7.10am at the Harwich and Dovercourt Hub and finished at the Electric Palace at 19.11pm to mark the date the cinema opened in 1911.

He raised a total of £882 for the Electric Palace, while covering 24.5 miles and completing 56,000 steps around Harwich.

David said: “Every donation that was made will help keep this amazing part of our community going.

“’The Electric Palace is a charity, run by a trust, and needs our help.

“Their core aim is to raise £70,000 of funding to be used on upgrading equipment, creating sustainable fundraising activities, and raise awareness of the cinema and the trust.”

The Electric Palace Cinema in Harwich is one of the oldest purpose-built cinemas to survive complete with its silent screen, original projection room and ornamental frontage still relatively intact.

Built in 1911, it is an important part of Harwich’s rich history.

David added: “The Electric Palace is a place that is very special, and a huge part of Harwich history.

“I want to help make it part of Harwich’s future too.

“So this event allowed me to bring together the great game of Street Tag, earning myself lots of tags and points, and supporting this amazing cinema.”

Street Tag is a free, virtual community game, being delivered in Harwich, Dovercourt and Walton by Community Voluntary Services Tendring (CVST), in partnership with Street Tag, Active Essex, Tendring District Council and Essex County Council.
