Party ends Beat the Street party

PLAYERS celebrated the end of a record-breaking community game with a beach hut party.

The free community game Beat the Street came to an end after six weeks in the town encouraging residents to get active and gain points to win prizes.

Delivered in partnership with Community Voluntary Services Tendring (CVST), Intelligent Health, Active Essex, Essex County Council and Tendring District Council, the game saw 4,794 players take part.

They ran, walked, cycled, and scooted between the 40 beat boxes around the town to earn points.

CVST organised free events for the players to attend, with the chance to gain triple points on their Beat the Street cards, including led rides with Essex Pedal Power, Tai Chi sessions, Seaside Explorers, ParkPlay sessions, box fit sessions, and free entry to historical places in Harwich.

Teams took part competing for top place on the leaderboards for schools, charities, small teams, as well as community and workplace.

Game Co-ordinator, Becky Dowling, physical activity co-ordinator for CVST, said: “Players covered a staggering 134,269 miles in the game.

“In the first few days we exceeded our target of getting 10per cent of Harwich and Dovercourt population playing and tapping beatboxes, which is amazing.

We are so pleased with how many people have been tapping throughout the game and joining us at our events each week.

“Congratulations to everyone who won vouchers and other prizes throughout the game from lucky draws, selfie competitions and the overall winners.

“But the fun isn’t over as players can keep searching for the green painted shells and stones, with white B’s on, scattered around Harwich to win a Beat the Street prize for the next six months.”

Becky added: “We really hope the game is just the start of getting residents out and about in the community more and moving more.

“There’s so much on offer in the area such as walking groups, cycling groups, Tai Chi, and more.”
