Winners Announced for Street Tag Season One

Community Game

WINNERS in the first season of a free game aimed at getting residents more active have been announced.

Street Tag, which is running in the Walton area and in Harwich and Dovercourt, turns parks and streets into a giant virtual playground.

Players earn points by collecting virtual tags – making physical activity into a fun game by converting walking, running, and cycling into Street Tag points (tags).

Split into community and school leaderboards, the community game finished its first season on Tuesday July 9 and the schools on July 23.

In the Harwich and Walton community game, team Horse Rangers took first place, made up of six Harwich residents earning just over 2,900,000 points combined.

The first season’s community leaderboard recorded a total of more than 22 million steps and a cumulative distance of 40,378 active miles covered.

Becky Dowling, physical activity co-ordinator at Community Voluntary Services Tendring (CVST), ran the game.

She said: “The first season of Street Tag in Harwich and Walton has gone by so fast and we are looking forward for more to come in the next two seasons.

“It is a brilliant way to have fun while getting active.

“We have more events and activities planned including our Street Tag Olympics so if you haven’t already joined up, do it now and join in for season two.”

The school leaderboard was split into the two towns with Rolph Primary as the Walton area winner and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary as Harwich and Dovercourt’s winner.

The Walton school season saw players cover 5,777 miles, while Harwich and Dovercourt school players covered 10,123 miles.

Becky added: “The great part of Street Tag is it’s free, fun and easy to be a part of.

“And it can be played anywhere as the tags are all over the UK, so even if you’re on a day out or on holiday you can collect points.

“The first school season has been a great success in Walton and Harwich and Dovercourt.

“Schools and pupils have collected millions of points by getting outside and getting active, by walking, running or cycling.”

The second season of the community game will kick off with a Summer Olympics on Tuesday 6th August with extra prizes up for grabs, and the school’s game will start on Wednesday 11th September

Schools Game

SCHOOLS in the Harwich and Walton areas have received their prizes for season one of a free community game.

Street Tag is being delivered in Harwich, Dovercourt and Walton areas by Community Voluntary Services Tendring (CVST), in Partnership with Street Tag, Active Essex, Tendring District Council and Essex County Council.

The free game allows players to collect virtual tags, on the Street Tag app, and gain points by walking, running, cycling, or scooting.

Residents can play as a team or individually to try and top the leaderboard and win prizes while students join to compete as schools.

This week the winners of the schools game got their prizes of £100 for first place and £75 for second place.

The schools leaderboards were split into Walton area schools and Harwich and Dovercourt schools.

Rolph C of E Primary School won the Walton schools game with 1,721,080 points, and Walton Primary School came in second place.

This Walton school season saw a total of around 5 million steps, with 12,060 tags and a cumulative distance of 5,777 miles covered.

The Harwich and Dovercourt schools winner was St Josephs Catholic School with 4,304,300 points and second place was Mayflower Primary School.

This Harwich school season saw a total of around nine million steps, with 25,777 tags and a cumulative distance of 10,123 miles covered.

Tags can be found on school routes, in local parks and public spaces, and at local events making it easy to join in the fun and be in the race for prizes.

Game co-ordinator, Becky Dowling, physical activity capacity building officer for CVST, said: “The great part of Street Tag is it’s a free, fun, and easy to be part of.

“The first school season was a great success in Walton and Harwich and Dovercourt and we encourage so many more to join in.

“Schools and pupils have collected millions of points by getting outside and getting active, by walking, running or cycling.

“Just download the app and start collecting tags before the second season ends and you too could be a winner.”

The app will automatically collect the tags within a 40-meter radius and change the colour or symbol.

There are tags across Harwich, Dovercourt and Walton waiting to be collected, and several more can be added in areas participants think need them.

The second season of Street Tag is still going until Tuesday 6th November 2024.

For more information on Street Tag visit www.streettag.co.uk and download the app from Google Play or the Apple App Store to join in the fun and get active.
