Summer of cycling on the sunshine coast

A series of free cycling events are being held this summer to get residents in Tendring more active.

The Summer of Cycling starts on August 8th and will run until September 28th in Clacton, Holland on Sea, St Osyth, Jaywick Sands and Walton.

Organised and run by Community Voluntary Services Tendring (CVST) and Essex Pedal Power, the 25 activities are being funded and supported by Active Essex, Essex County Council, Safer Greener Healthier, Find Your Active and Cycling UK’s Big Bike Revival

There will be opportunities to learn the basic skills of riding a bike with Learn to Ride sessions, as well as how to keep your bike in the best condition with Learn to Fix lessons and sessions with Dr Bike.

There will also be Ride Together events to meet new friends and cycle with other residents.

Becky Dowling, physical activities capacity building officer for CVST has been organising the events, along with Active Essex and Essex Pedal Power.

She said: “Summer of Cycling is a great way to stay active with others, learn new skills and get out to make new friends this summer.

“This is the first time we’ve run a whole summer of cycling activities and we are so excited.

“In the past two years, since Essex Pedal Power launched in Clacton, we’ve seen so many more people take up cycling as a way to get around where they live as well as a way to get active and make friends.

“So, for us a summer of cycling is a great way to build on that with events for those who are new to cycling or want to take it up, and those who are already enjoying cycling in Tendring.

Rosie-Roella Kevlin, Essex Pedal Power Clacton and Jaywick Sands coordinator, said: “Do you have a bike in the shed or garage that you or someone you know could use?

“Bring it down to any of the Learn to Fix or Dr Bike sessions; or if you’ve never learnt to ride or lack the confidence, book onto the Learn to Rides - each session is 45 minutes.

“The Ride Togethers are a lovely opportunity to join local group lead riders on a ride around the community building confidence, friendships, and knowledge.

“Get ready and get involved for that Happy Wheeling Feeling this summer!”

Due to limited spaces, it is essential to book for Learn to Ride events.
