Ukraine Independence Day 2024

UKRAINIAN Independence Day was celebrated with traditional music, food and presentations.

Community Voluntary Service Tendring (CVST) hosted the evening celebration on Wednesday 28th August at Imperial house.

The event brought the together Ukrainian people, their hosts and the wider community with a presentation on the history of Ukraine, traditional music by Elena Robdrup and Angelika Bandasiewicz-Walec, a poem reading, talk from Harwich Ukraine Support Project and singing of the Ukrainian National Anthem.

After some of the performances there was a chance to sample some Ukrainian food and refreshments as well as talk to the Harwich Ukraine Support Project, performers, and Essex Fire and Rescue Service for free fire alarms.

Children that attended the event, were also able to do crafts while the performances were on.

Lera Dmytriw, cultural awareness community connector at CVST, said: “It was a successful evening with so many members of the community attending, both from Ukraine and the Tendring area.

“With some amazing performances, talks and traditional food, everyone came together for a lovely celebration of the 33rd Ukraine Independence Day.

“We want to say a big thank you to everyone that attended and for supporting Ukraine.”

The event saw Tendring District Council, economic growth officers for creative, culture and leisure, Essex Fire and Rescue Service and Essex Police, as well as Councillor Gina Placey, all attend the event.

The Harwich Ukraine Support Project, run by Tony Elliston, is a shop located on George Street in Harwich which is looking for donations and anyone that would like to take part in the project.
